Background

Bin Laden was a son of Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden, a Yemeni-born Saudi billionaire construction magnate closely tied to the Saudi royal family. Educated at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, where he encountered Muslim Brotherhood–linked ideologues. From 1979 he channeled family wealth and logistical support to mujahideen factions fighting the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, working alongside Abdullah Azzam through the Maktab al-Khidamat services bureau in Peshawar.

Significance

In 1988 bin Laden co-founded al-Qaeda ("the Base") to extend transnational jihadist organising beyond the Afghan conflict. His 1996 and 1998 declarations against the United States and its allies — and the 1998 East Africa embassy bombings, 2000 USS Cole attack, and September 11, 2001 attacks — established al-Qaeda as the central reference point for the modern transnational jihadist movement. His killing in 2011 marked a major operational and symbolic loss for the group, but al-Qaeda's regional affiliates and the broader ideological network persist.
